The magic happens when kids are having so much fun they don't even realize they're learning! That's exactly what these flower activities for kids deliver - simple yet enriching projects that develop crucial skills while keeping little hands busy.
Today I'm sharing one of my favorite versatile printables that can be used in multiple ways - my Flower Outline Printable. The best part? You can transform it into 6 different creative flower activities using basic supplies!
Why These Flower Activities for Kids Are So Beneficial
Before diving into the activities, let's talk about why these flower printable projects are so enriching for young children:
- With flowers naturally blooming outside this time of year, these printable activities create a meaningful connection to the outdoors through hands-on learning.
- The flower shape helps develop fine motor skills as children trace, color, and manipulate materials.
- These activities encourage sensory exploration through different textures.
- Flower themes connect to seasonal learning about spring and summer.
- They're perfect for supplementing plant units in homeschool or preschool curriculums (check out my Play at Home Preschool PLANTS unit!).
Young children learn best through hands-on experiences, and these flower activities for kids provide exactly that kind of engaging learning opportunity. Each activity below builds different skills while maintaining that crucial play-based approach that keeps children motivated and excited to learn.
6 Creative Ways to Use my Flower Printable
1. Flower Bean Mosaic Art

This colorful arts and crafts activity develops fine motor skills and creativity.
Supplies needed:
- Flower printable (or draw a flower outline on a piece of paper with Sharpie)
- White glue
- Dried beans (like lima beans, kidney beans, etc. Choose a white bean if you'd like to dye them with food coloring a few days in advance!)
How to do it:
- Print out the flower printable.
- Have your child apply glue to a small section within the flower outline.
- Let them place the beans onto the glue until the section is filled in. Repeat for the whole flower!
- For younger toddlers, you can pre-apply the glue and just let them place the beans.
- Allow to dry completely before displaying your child's creation!
This activity is perfect for developing pincer grasp in toddlers and young preschoolers while also introducing concepts of patterns and design. My 3-year-old spent nearly 30 minutes focused on placing beans just right - that's concentration gold in the toddler world!
2. Flower Sensory Tracing
Transform the printable into a sensory tracing activity that helps develop pre-writing skills.
Supplies needed:
- Flower printable
- White glue mixed with a few drops of food coloring
- Optional: add glitter to the glue for extra sensory appeal
How to do it:
- Print the flower template.
- Trace the outlines with colored glue.
- Allow to dry completely (overnight is best).
- Once dry, children can use their fingers to trace the raised lines for a tactile experience.
This sensory approach to tracing helps children develop the finger strength and coordination needed for writing!
3. Sponge-Painted Flower
Turn your printable into a painting station that introduces texture and stamping techniques.
Supplies needed:
- Flower printable
- Sponges cut into small, different shapes or round sponge paintbrush
- Washable paint
How to do it:
- Print the flower template.
- Let children dip sponges into paint and stamp inside the flower design.
- Encourage mixing colors and creating textured effects.
This flower activity for kids introduces concepts of texture and printmaking in an accessible way for young children. The sponges create interesting effects that children can't achieve with brushes alone.
4. Salt Painting Watercolor Flowers
This magical art activity combines science and creativity as kids watch colors spread through salt crystals.
Supplies needed:
- Flower printable
- White glue
- Table salt
- Watercolor paints and small paintbrush
- Cup of water for cleaning off the paintbrush
How to do it:
- Print the flower template
- Have your child trace the flower outline with white glue
- Sprinkle salt generously over the wet glue
- Gently shake off excess salt
- Using a paintbrush, touch watercolors to the salt lines and watch the color magically spread!
The science behind this flower activity for kids is fascinating - the salt crystals absorb the colored water through capillary action, creating a beautiful flowing effect. This adds a wonderful STEM element to your art project!

5. Nature Collage Flower
Combine your printable with a nature walk for a Spring outdoor activity!
Supplies needed:
- Flower printable
- White glue
- Natural items collected on a walk (small leaves, flower petals, grass, etc.)
How to do it:
- Go on a nature walk to collect small, safe natural items.
- Print the flower template.
- Apply glue inside the flower shape.
- Arrange natural items inside the flower outline.
- Allow to dry completely.
This activity connects flower activities for kids with authentic outdoor exploration, bringing nature right into craft time!
6. Pom-Pom Flower Color Sorting
Turn your printable into a color recognition game that's perfect for toddlers.
Supplies needed:
- Flower printable
- Colored markers
- Small pompoms in matching colors
- Tweezers or tongs (optional for older children)
How to do it:
- Color each petal and the center of the flower a different color.
- Set out pompoms that match the colors used.
- Have children match pompoms to the correctly colored petals.
- Older children can use tweezers for an added fine motor challenge.
This simple flower activity for kids is perfect for younger toddlers who are learning color names and practicing their matching skills.
