Materials Needed:
- Red, white, or blue yarn (cut into 24-inch pieces)
- Patterned paper straws
- Masking tape (to wrap yarn ends for easier threading)
- Child-safe scissors
- Optional: Red, white, and/or blue pony beads or star beads
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Have your child cut the patterned straws into 1" pieces.
- Wrap tape around one end of the yarn to create a "needle" for easier threading.
- Show your toddler how to thread the yarn through straw pieces and beads.
- Encourage pattern-making by suggesting sequences.
- Allow your child to create their own patterns as their confidence grows!
- Help tie the necklace ends together to complete their necklace.
Skills and Benefits:
This activity strengthens fine motor skills through the threading movements. Pattern recognition develops as children create sequences with the straws and/or beads. Color identification and sorting skills are naturally reinforced through the red, white, and blue color scheme. Activity 2: Pom Pom Blaster STEM Fun
STEM learning combines with patriotic fun in this exciting activity that gets kids moving and thinking! This 4th of July activities for kids project introduces basic physics concepts and cause-and-effect learning while developing hand strength and coordination.
Materials Needed:
- White cardboard tube (or paper towel or toilet paper roll)
- Red or blue craft tape for decorating
- Red and blue pom poms (various sizes work great)
- Red or blue balloon
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Decorate the cardboard tube with tape. You could use other materials like stickers or markers, etc.
- Without inflating the balloon, tie a knot at the end. Then cut the top of the balloon off, about halfway from the top.
- Stretch the balloon over one end of the decorated tube. Optional: Tape the balloon onto the decorated tube for extra security.
- Place a pom pom inside the tube, then pull back the knotted end of the balloon and release to launch pom poms!
- Set up targets using baskets or containers for even more launching fun.
- Encourage experimentation with different pom pom sizes and launch strengths.
Skills and Benefits:
This activity builds fine and gross motor skills through the pulling and releasing motions, spatial awareness as children aim at targets and observe trajectories, and cause-and-effect reasoning as kids discover how different pulling strengths affect launch distance.
Activity 3: Red, White, and Blue Beans Sensory Bin
Sensory play is crucial for child development, and this red, white, and blue sensory bin delivers calming, engaging exploration opportunities. This is one of the most versatile 4th of July activities for kids because it can be adapted for different ages and sensory preferences while supporting cognitive development and emotional regulation.
Prep Note: You will need to dye the beans a day or two in advance to allow them to fully dry.
Materials Needed:
- Dried white beans
- Red and blue acrylic paint
- Gallon Ziploc bags for dyeing beans
- Large shallow container or sensory bin
- Sensory tools of choice: Patriotic-themed scoops, cups, and small containers
- Sensory trinkets of choice: stars, small American flags, red or blue gems, etc.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Prepare dyed beans in advance by placing white beans in plastic ziploc bags with a small amount of acrylic paint.
- Shake bags until beans are evenly colored, then spread on a lined baking sheet to dry completely. This could take up to 24 hours. Place in the sun for quicker drying!
- Fill your sensory bin with the red, white, and blue beans in separate sections or mixed together.
- Add your sensory tools (scoops and small containers) for pouring and transferring.
- Add your 4th of July treasures throughout the beans for discovery play.
- Encourage exploration through pouring, scooping, and hunting.
- Ask open-ended questions about colors, textures, and discoveries to extend learning!

This movement-based learning activity combines the excitement of a treasure hunt with important cognitive skills development. It's one of the most active 4th of July activities for kids and perfect for burning energy while building essential academic readiness skills.
Materials Needed:
- Free Star Search & Sort Printable, printed out
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue stick
- Timer for added excitement (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- If old enough, have your child cut out the red and blue stars from the Star Search & Sort Printable.
- Place the Sorting Sheet and the glue stick together on a table.
- Hide the stars throughout your house in age-appropriate locations.
- Explain the hunt mission to your child: find a star, run back to the sorting sheet, and then glue the star into the appropriate column. Then search for another next star!
- Encourage active searching through crawling and reaching. I like to have them return to the sorting sheet after finding each star: this extends the activity and encourages more gross motor development!
- Celebrate successful sorting and count the stars together!

This activity strengthens gross motor skills, sorting and classification skills, problem-solving, memory development and spatial reasoning. Following directions and task completion skills are naturally practiced throughout this engaging activity!
